Mountaineers rack up individual wins at Menominee

MENOMINEE — Iron Mountain stacked up some individual wins at a wrestling quad involving Menominee, Escanaba and Negaunee here Tuesday but was far outnumbered to collect any team victories.

Host Menominee came away with a 1-1 record, defeating Iron Mountain and falling to Negaunee. Escanaba and Menominee didn’t compete against each other as they have an upcoming match in the next few days, but the Eskymos went 2-0 against IM and Negaunee for the best record of the night.

The Maroons’ first match was against the Mountaineers, and in the first action of the night, Braxton Silkwork (160) went up against IM’s Brent Aman and took him into the second round before Aman was able to get him on his back for a pin in 2 minutes, 34 seconds.

“Brent is a first year senior wrestler and I thought he did really well tonight,” IM coach Cory McLaren said.

Menominee’s Wilbert Ortega (103-pounds), Tyler Huesinger (140), Joe Gimbel (171), Pedro Montoya (189) and Dylan Oudeans (215) all won by forfeit to give Menominee 30 team points. IM was also the beneficiary of a few forfeits as Preston Roberts (145), Shawn McGuire (119) and Evan Haferkorn (125) all received forfeit wins as well for 18 points.

At 130, Menominee’s Kaeleb Crawford was pinned in 3:24 by Parker Stroud to knot the match at 30 points each and it all came down to the 135-pound match.

IM’s Isaac Manier and Menominee’s Aiden Smith knew this match was going to be the deciding factor, and in the end, Smith came away with a win by decision to give the Maroons three team points for a 33-30 victory.

“Aiden always does a good job, he’s a very good wrestler and he was the hero for us tonight,” Kesti said.

“That was the swing match and it was close to the end and Isaac wrestled well but he came up just short,” McLaren said. “Little upset with the score but if you don’t win the swing match you don’t win the team match.”

IM had the tall task of wrestling against Escanaba in their second match and the Eskymos — the reigning U.P. Champs for three consecutive years — won by a score of 52-15. Again, the Mountaineers were forced to forfeit many of the matches that gave Esky a 36-0 advantage before IM could put a wrestler on the mat.

When they finally did, McGuire won by pinfall at 119 over Trevor De Brand in 3:36, Haferkorn won by decision over Adam Reimer and Manier pinned Brock Viall in 5:14, but the forfeits were too much to overcome.

Esky’s Collin Arnt got the best of Stroud at 130 with a pin in 1:08; Brodey Bevins (145) pinned Roberts in 41 seconds and Vaxon Vizneau defeated Aman at 152 in 2:53.
