North Dickinson win streak stopped at 10

Flivvers do it again, defeating ND 49-39

FELCH — Kingsford certainly has North Dickinson’s number this season.

The Flivvers knocked off the Nordics 49-39 Tuesday in non-conference girls basketball at the Carl F. Lemin Jr. Gymnasium, snapping ND’s impressive 10-game winning streak.

It was the Nordics’ first loss since dropping the season-opener to these same Flivvers (4-7), 55-42 on Dec. 3.

Since then, the Nordics achieved a No. 5 ranking in the U.P.S.S.A. Division 4 Poll, while earning a tie with Pickford for the No. 7 spot in the Michigan Associated Press State Poll.

On Tuesday, Kingsford’s Brooke Kriegl led all scorers with 13 points, while Kate Cook chipped in 10.

Skye Ledzian led the way for the Nordics with 10 points, while point guard Brianna Smith added eight.

For the majority of the game, both teams were in man-to-man defense, with the Nordics using a half-court trap as Smith and Hannah Clark double-teamed Kriegl at times.

Both Kriegl and Smith are exceptional point guards who see the floor well, but they are also are great defenders. They guarded one another for the majority of the game. The matchup was fun to watch for everyone in attendance, with both coaches noting that as well in their postgame interviews.

Kingsford head coach, and North Dickinson alum Lisa (Roell) Harry said, “They made us earn this one. They’re coming in on an impressive 10-game winning streak, and we’re coming off three losses in a row. There were many point swings in the game, on both sides of the scoreboard.”

Harry noted that the battle between the two point guards (Kriegl and Smith) was awesome.

“They played pretty evenly and both hit some shots at key times,” said Harry. “It was fun to watch.”

Nordics head coach Kirk Mattson was fairly upbeat after the game, despite his team’s winning streak coming to an end.

“Kingsford’s record, it doesn’t show what type of ball team they have. Our girls are upbeat and realize they got beat by a good team,” said Mattson.

Mattson noted that his team fought back from being behind a few different times. He also said he was proud that the girls didn’t quit.

Mattson added he thoroughly enjoyed the point guard battle, noting Smith does so much for the Nordics, being asked to guard the opponent’s best player in every game while running the Nordics’ offense.

One of those times where the Nordics fought their way back was when they went of an 8-0 scoring run in the second quarter. That run was stopped when Cook hit a 3-pointer for the Flivvers.

Both teams used their bench players. With North Dickinson only having seven total players, their two bench players frequently play a lot of minutes. Mattson noted that both of them, sophomore Kassandra Cary and freshman Micah Lindholm, got quality minutes when they were called upon.

Playing her first career game on the varsity Tuesday night was Kingsford sophomore Talia Wallis. Harry noted she was happy with Wallis’ play.

What was the difference in the game was the mismatch of size, as the Flivvers have three players who are very tall in comparison to the Nordics’ entire roster. Maggie Strehlow, Cook and Ali Doolittle seemed to tower over the Nordics, which gave them an advantage on both ends of the floor throughout the game.

The Flivvers are off until Monday when they host non-conference foe West Iron County. On Tuesday, the Flivvers return home to host Norway.

North Dickinson jumps back into conference play Thursday traveling to Stephenson.

In the JV game, the Flivvers were led by Laura Bracket with 14 points as they defeated the Nordics 59-20. Gabby Schultz drained 10 points for ND in the loss.
