IRON MOUNTAIN – Kassie Gyselinck, Mackenzie Clifford and Danae Anderson all scored in double figures for Norway in a 45-34 girls basketball victory over Iron Mountain Tuesday evening, the first win of the season for the Knights.
Gyselinck led all scorers with 17 points. Clifford added 15, and Anderson poured in 10 for the Knights, who had come up short in their previous nine games.
“We showed up right from the start and put together four solid quarters,” Norway head coach Joe Tinti said. “Every girl on the roster contributed tonight and I am extremely proud of them.
“We have been taking steps to what we can become and tonight we took a giant leap. There will still be learning moments but feel we can expect to see more of tonight’s team the second half of the season.”
The Knights led by 10 after the first quarter and never trailed after that. The Mountaineers made a run in the final stanza to get within five but never any closer as Norway pulled away late.
“Mackenzie Clifford had a breakout offensive game and Danae and Kassie continued their increased offensive production,” Tinti said. “Everyone played solid defense. We had some big free throws in crunch time and a huge steal and layup from McKenna Neuens.
“Iron Mountain hung tough and hit some big shots to start a few comebacks but we were able to answer.”
Reagan Lundholm’s 11 points paced the Mountaineers. Annslee Runsat scored six, while Claire Mongrain and Ellison Powell each chipped in with five points. Tori Sorensen collected 11 of Iron Mountain’s 29 rebounds.
“Norway came to play and they were hungry to win,” IM coach Katelynn Grenier said. “They wanted the win more tonight and it showed. We struggled to score and our outside shooting was off. We have to do a better job of moving the ball and creating our own shots when the ball isn’t going in the basket.”
Norway’s JV squad improved to 10-0 with an overtime victory over the Mountaineers. The Knights host North Central Thursday.
Iron Mountain, which had collected its first win of the season against Houghton its last time out, fell to 1-7. The Mountaineers head to Ishpeming Thursday.
