Wrestlers ready for UP Finals

KINGSFORD– The Kingsford Flivvers wrestling team hosted a quadrangular event Thursday, slipping past Negaunee 39-34 and falling to Westwood 40-35.

Head coach Darren Groleau noted the victory over Negaunee came down to the last match with Logan Couillard at 160 pounds.

“Logan needed to win for us, and he did in a big way with a pin,” said Groleau. “We showed a lot of heart tonight in both matches.”

Michael Hill-Scott got a last-second takedown and near fall for the win against Negaunee’s John Schouten 9-6.

“Ben (Standish) also had a huge win for us at 215. Ben was up 5-2 before Leo Helppi of Negaunee got injured. Ben and Leo have wrestled a few times and always a tough match,” said Groleau. “Overall, we showed a lot of heart and determination. We wrestled very well in both matches. Our captains Eddie Cardew, Standish, Elliot Johnson and Toby Wilcox all stepped up and got huge wins for us against Negaunee.”

Wilcox, Josh Peterson, Johnson and Matt Wilson had pins against Westwood.

“We wrestled tough and had some great matches,” Groleau said. “We competed and did well.”

U.P. Finals take place Saturday in Marquette.

“In both matches on Thursday, we fought hard and competed in every match,” Groleau said. “Coming into UP’s, we liked what we saw and hopefully we can keep this going.”

Iron Mountain also competes in the finals at Marquette Senior High School.

“It should be a great weekend with the possibility of getting five wrestlers into the medal rounds and the other two with chances to make it as well,” said head coach Cory McLaren. “We have had the last two weeks off from competition and were able to get healthy.”

Freshmen Shawn McGuire (112) and Evan Haferkorn (125), and sophomores Parker Stroud (130), Isaac Manier (135) and Preston Roberts (140) should be in the hunt for medals, according to McLaren. McGuire brings a 21-1 record into the finals.
