Flivvers blow out Gaylord, 8-2

IRON MOUNTAIN — Behind three goals and two assists from senior forward Reece Fortner, Kingsford routed Gaylord 8-2 Saturday afternoon at Mountain View Ice Arena. Fellow senior Trey Bociek added two goals and two assists in the non-conference matchup.
“Our compete level was good this afternoon, which is great because of the lineup changes we made prior to the game,” said Kingsford head coach Greg Wadge. “All three lines really, really moved the puck well. We got the pucks in deep (into our zone) and caused a lot of turnovers.”
Wadge noted that scoring eight goals in one game is out of the norm for the Flivvers, but was nice to see.
The first period saw the puck and game action go back and forth, with neither team spending a significant amount of time in their opponent’s zone. The Flivvers outshot the Blue Devils in the period 17-10, taking a 3-0 lead into the first intermission.
Kingsford got two more goals, which caused Gaylord to make a goalie switch. Starting goalie Austin Sitz was pulled from the game for the rest of the period and backup goalie Brewer Koleszar was inserted, giving up one goal seconds before the period ended.
Near the end of the second period, Flivvers sophomore Tony Kralovec was assessed a five-minute major penalty and a 10-minute game misconduct disqualification for contact to the head of a Blue Devils player. After several minutes of being attended to by training staff and Gaylord’s coaching staff, the player was helped off the ice to receive medical attention.
“I didn’t see it happen live, because the incident was behind the play,” said Wadge. “But it was not good, there was blood on the ice and I hope their player is going to be OK. This incident is not what our program is about, we don’t play this way.”
Twenty seconds later, Colton Hurst of Gaylord netted his second goal of the period, a power play goal to make the score 6-2 in favor of the host Flivvers. Kingsford took their four-goal advantage into the second intermission.
Reece Fortner added two more Kingsford goals in the final period, as Gaylord brought their starting goalie back at that point.
The Flivvers’ netminder Evan Hedtke, a senior at Forest Park High School, stopped 34 Blue Devil shots on the afternoon. Gaylord outshot the Flivvers on the day, another testament to the steady goaltending the Flivvers get from Hedtke game in and game out.
It was a festive atmosphere in Mountain View on the afternoon. A portion of the Kingsford High School band was on hand for the game, under the direction of Logan Galindo. And it was “Pink The Rink” for the afternoon contest. There were items being sold and raffled off in the lobby, with all proceeds going to cancer research and the area’s Cancer Loan Closet. The “Chuck a Puck” contest that occurs during the first intermission of most Flivver home games, was instead little foam ducks, that were bright pink in color. Several fans, parents and family members of players were decked out in bright pink. Even some of the Mountain View Ice Arena volunteers had pink shirts on.
Kingsford (10-11) remains home to entertain Negaunee Tuesday night. The Great Lakes Hockey Conference game will also be senior night for the Flivvers.
Gaylord head coach Jamie Voss declined comment after the game.
