Jets girls close season with loss, enter MHSAA tournament play Monday

ST. NICHOLAS — Kennedy Englund shined on Senior Night here Thursday, helping the Mid Peninsula girls post a 60-51 basketball triumph over the North Central Jets.

Englund scored 25 points, grabbed 15 rebounds and blocked two shots in this Skyline Central Conference match-up, a huge turn-around from Tuesday night when she failed to score in a 43-34 loss at Stephenson.

“The girls came around after our no-show on Tuesday,” said Mid Pen coach Phil Croasdell. “All the seniors played well. This was a nice bounce back for Kennedy. Chevy (Koski) had a real nice game and Daisy (Englund) hit some 3’s when we really needed them.”

Daisy Englund snapped a 37-37 deadlock by hitting a pair of triples for a 43-37 lead late in the third quarter of the regular-season finale.

North Central, however, scored the last four points in the third, pulling within 43-41 on a 21-foot jump shot by senior Bree Arsenault.

Junior Andie Arsenault pulled the Jets even at 43 with a pair of free throws to open the fourth.

The Jets then had a chance to take the lead, but Koski stole the ball and sank a pair of gifters to put the Wolverines up 45-43.

Mid Pen extended its lead to 53-43 with three minutes, 12 seconds left to play on a set shot from top of the key by Koski.

“They hit some big 3’s,” said Jets coach Lee Vincent. “We had some turnovers when we could have taken the lead. Otherwise, we played hard.”

The Jets led 13-11 late in the opening frame following a free throw by Andie Arsenault.

Mid Pen then tied the score at the buzzer when Kennedy Englund broke through the lane for a layup, set up on a pass from freshman Landry Koski.

The Wolverines extended their lead to 29-19 on a pair of gifters by Chevy Koski with 2:52 remaining in the second.

North Central answered with a 7-0 run, trimming its deficit to 29-26 on a layup by Bree Arsenault.

Mid Pen, however, got a 31-26 cushion shortly before the half on a jumper from the boulevard by senior Camryn Croasdell.

A jumper from the lane by Kennedy Englund put the Wolverines up 35-28 two minutes into the third before the Jets rallied to tie the score at 37 on a 3-point play by Bree Arsenault.

Chevy Koski added 15 points and Daisy Englund sank four trifectas for 12. Andie Arsenault paced the Jets with 15 points. Junior Chloe Webber hit 14 and Bree Arsenault had 10.

“I think North Central is coming around a little,” said coach Croasdell. “They’re getting their kids back. I’m glad to see the Arsenault girls are back and the Webber girl hit some dandy shots. We like playing teams like North Central. They play clean ball, which is good to see.

“We played good defense and our offense did all right. We shot 14-of-15 from the line, which is awesome.”

The Wolverines (15-5 overall, 10-5 SCC) held a 39-29 rebounding advantage, hit 20-of-64 field goals and committed 10 turnovers. The Jets (11-9 overall, 11-7 league) were 17-of-59 from the field and had 13 miscues.

“When you shoot 28 percent, you’re not going to win,” said Vincent. “You’ve got to make the layups to win and we missed a lot of those. We didn’t box out very well and didn’t push the ball enough. We also didn’t play smart in our zone. We let people to go down the lane.”

North Central played without junior Jaiden Fleetwood, who was out with a wrist injury.

The Jets, who won the JV game 38-23, visit Carney-Nadeau for their Division 4 district opener Monday. The Wolverines open their postseason at home against Munising Monday.
