Kingsford sophomore Wilcox headed to Ford Field for state wrestling final

BOYNE CITY — Kingsford will send one wrestler to the MHSAA individual state finals, as sophomore Toby Wilcox has qualified for the meet set for March 6-7 at Ford Field.

Wilcox wrestled to a third-place finish at last weekend’s regional tournament. Wrestling at 145 pounds, Wilcox first defeated Arthur Dennison of Pinconning 1-0. He then fell to state-ranked Colt Smedley of Clare (8-3) before rebounding against Craig Wernette of Chippewa Falls. Wilcox won that match 3-2 to advance to states and then went on to defeat Kyan Fessenden of Kingsley 4-0 in the third/fourth place match.

“Toby had his best tournament of the year when it mattered,” Kingsford head coach Darren Groleau said. “We talked goals and one of Toby’s goals was to be a state qualifier. We can check that off of the list. Now we need to continue to push and focus on making that podium.”

Flivver senior Eddie Cardew ended his career as a Flivver coming up one win away from making it to state.

“Eddie has an awesome career and will go down as one of the best heavyweights to come out of Kingsford,” Groleau said. “We are proud of this young man and the success he had with this team. We will miss him.”

Mac Kalcec and Josh Peterson both ended their freshman campaigns with a trip to regionals.

“Mac went 0-2 but had a great showing and we are proud of how far he and Josh have come this season,” Groleau said. “Josh had a very tough bracket at 140 and came up one win away from making it to states as a freshman. He wrestled to his best capabilities this weekend and left it all on the mat.

“Overall we wrestled to our competitions level and did very well. All of our guys left everything on the mat and wrestled with pride. We’re excited to get three of the four guys back next year.

Kingsford is planning some joint practices to get Wilcox ready for state finals.
