Northwoods Storm wrestler Kelley falls in state sectionals

Caitlyn Kelley defends a shot from Alec Berglin of Denmark in the wrestle-back round of the WIAA Division 2 Sectional Tournament in Oconto Falls, Wis.

FLORENCE, Wis. — Caitlyn Kelley’s freshman boys high school wrestling season came to an end at the WIAA State Sectional tournament this past Saturday in Oconto Falls.

Kelley, the first girl from the Northern Lakes Conference to ever make the trip to sectionals, battled against illness and injuries, which limited her conditioning and practice time.

The Northwoods Storm wrestler lost her first round match against the number 10th ranked wrestler in the state, Caiden Kleinschimdt of Winneconne. In the wrestle back round, Kelley fell to Alec Berglin of Denmark, 10-1, in three periods. Berglin wrestled much of the season at the 113 weight class before dropping down to the 106 weight class for the state tournament.

Kelley’s goal for her freshman year at Florence High School was to make it to sectionals and compete, which she was able to accomplish. The Oconto Falls Sectional was the toughest in all of Division 2, with five of the top 10 schools competing in it, including No. 1Wrightstown.

Kelley will now focus on one remaining WWF Girls High School State Folkstyle tournament on March 8 in Stevens Point, Wis., then will set her sights on freestyle wrestling, her biggest passion.

In May, Kelley will travel to Texas to compete in the World Team Trials in hopes of earning a spot on the U.S. Women’s Cadet Freestyle Team.
