DETROIT — Iron Mountain wrestler Shawn McGuire, a freshman, will wrestle for a Division 4 state championship at 112 pounds today.

McGuire advanced in the semifinals of the MHSAA tournament at Ford Field with a 13-0 major decision Friday over Payton Rogers of Hudson.

“Today was a great day for Shawn with three big wins,” said Iron Mountain coach Cory McLaren. “He dominated all three of his matches and he has been so steady all year and never seems to get in a bad position, and he is looking to be our first state champ.”

In his first match, McGuire pinned Gabe Mullins of St Charles in the first period. In the quarterfinals, he won by major decision over Blake Baker of Dansville, 12-4.

McGuire will face Bronson Marry of Hudson in the finals, starting at 3:30 p.m. Eastern time. He is the only U.P. wrestler to reach the finals this year.

Stroud then defeated Spencer Vanderzwags of Hart by major decision, 12-2, putting him in the medal round against Drew Gebhardt of Manchester.

Kingsford sophomore Toby Wilcox, at 145 pounds, was one win away from the medal round. He lost 11-3 to Sam Jackson from Lakeview, ending his chance of moving further in the state tournament.
