Like mother, like son: Hixon joins 1,000 club

FLORENCE, Wis. – There is now a mother and son both in an exclusive club at Florence High School. Bobcats senior Riley Hixon broke the 1,000 career point mark on March 3 versus long time rival Niagara in a WIAA first round regional tournament game.

Hixon, sitting at 998 points coming into the game, joined 11 other Bobcat alumnus in the exclusive club. But one person in particular in that group stands out to Hixon — his mom, Chris Witynski, who netted 1,195 points in her career as a LadyCat.

Hixon was going up for a dunk at approximately the 6:00 mark of the first half against the Badgers. He was fouled, but the ball managed to go in, giving him 1,000 points.

“I made the free throw to complete the ‘and one’, so I was at 1,001 after that,” said Hixon.

As the list of the other 1,000 point scorers was brought up to Hixon he proclaimed, “My mom is one of them, and it feels pretty good to be on there with her. There was a ceremony when I was younger honoring all of the 1,000 point club, and I told her I was going to be on there with her. It’s very cool to be on there with her for sure.”

Hixon, who was a member of the Bobcats varsity team for four full seasons, noted that he didn’t play much as a freshman, despite being brought up because the Bobcats had eight seniors on their roster that season. He became a starter his sophomore season and started ever since.

In his sophomore season, Hixon averaged 18 points per game, which was his highest scoring average of his three seasons as a starter.

Hixon was the second Bobcats senior to surpass 1,000 career points this season, as teammate Kaden Schuls did it earlier in the season.

Hixon, who sat at 1,011 points after the Niagara game, finished his Bobcats career with 1,033 points. The Florence 1,000 point club going into this season was as follows:

Kari Flunker; 1,951, Jaclynn Kriegl; 1,498, DeAnna DeMuri; 1,447, Chris Witynski; 1,195, Patty Smith; 1,146, Bill Counter; 1,340, Dion Wolosyn; 1,123, John Kriegl; 1,082, Joe Kriegl, 1,038 and Josh Enders; 1,014.
