Schools in the UP and northern Lower Peninsula OK for boys soccer, volleyball; girls swim allowed in LP
EAST LANSING (AP) — High schools in the Upper Peninsula and much of the northern Lower Peninsula can compete in fall soccer, volleyball and swimming, officials said Thursday.
But schools in other regions of Michigan need to wait to hear more from Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, the Michigan High School Athletic Association said.
“We need more answers before we can give all of our member schools the go-ahead to play each other again, and the majority of our schools are in regions that are not yet allowed to take part in volleyball, soccer and swim,” executive director Mark Uyl said.
Schools that have the green light are in regions 6 and 8, which cover the Upper Peninsula and nearly 20 counties in the northern Lower Peninsula.
Football is being moved to spring from fall to reduce the risk of the coronavirus. The MHSAA said teams can have 16 contact practice days from Aug. 24 through Oct 31.
Some local reaction to this announcement came from Norway girls volleyball head coach Erika Harnden. “We didn’t stop practicing while we awaited today’s (Wednesday’s) announcement,” Harnden said. “As a team, we’re glad to get to have our season, even if a few matches get canceled here and there.”
Athletic directors in the region continued to discuss crowd accessibility to indoor events, such as volleyball, and junior high girls basketball.
No firm decision has been made by any area schools at this time, but the discussion of this matter will happen in the coming days.
