FLORENCE, Wis. — A safety proved to be the difference as Florence fell to Laona-Wabeno 8-6 in Northern Lakes Conference eight-player football Friday.

With Florence trailing 8-0, Evan Johnson’s TD run early in the fourth quarter was the final score of the contest. The Bobcats’ try for a two-point conversion failed after a penalty pushed them back.

“Not a real pretty game,” said Florence coach Kent Walstrom.

Johnson finished with 51 yards on eight carries and Patrick Milan gained 26 yards in seven trips.

“We couldn’t get anything going through the air,” Walstrom said.

The game featured plenty of underclassmen playing for both teams, he added.

Defensive leaders for Florence were Trent Watkins, nine tackles and an interception; William Liebergen, six tackles; Corbin Behrmann, seven tackles; and Matthew Johnson, eight tackles.

Florence travels to White Lake on Friday.
