Norway netters split with Escanaba, 4-4

(Matt McCarthy/Daily News photo) Norway’s No. 2 Singles player Donna VanHolla serves the ball in a match versus Iron Mountain on Aug. 27 at the East Side Tennis Courts in Iron Mountain. VanHolla picked her up her first varsity tennis win Thursday versus Escanaba at Marion Park in Norway.

NORWAY TOWNSHIP — In non-conference girls tennis action Thursday at Marion Park, Norway hosted Escanaba, and the teams battled to a 4-4 tie on the afternoon.

“I am super excited for the girls to have gotten some wins today. The doubles matches were closely matched so they were fun to watch, said Norway coach Cassandra Gustafson. “The girls learned how to play tie-breakers as well, and the singles matches were hard fought. Today was a great learning experience for all of us.”

Norway’s wins came from No. 1 singles player Kali Stanchina, and No. 2 singles competitor Donna VanHolla. The Lady Knights only field two of the four doubles teams, and both of them won — Kassandra Gyselinck and Gabby Leiker at No. 1, and Andi Carlson and Averie Popp at No. 2.

Norway is off until Wednesday, when they travel to Gwinn, for a non-conference match.
