Wykon netters blank Norway, 8-0

STAMBAUGH — West Iron County’s girls tennis team hosted non-conference foe Norway Monday afternoon at Nelson Field Tennis Courts. The Wykons defeated the Lady Knights 8-0.

“This was a great way to finish the duel match season. Livea (Mazurek) and Tori (Bociek) went out on a high note in their final home matches of their West Iron careers. Both girls were integral parts of our team the last three years as U.P. runner-ups,” said Wykons coach Joe Serbentas. “Their leadership was important especially in these tough times.”

Norway, who has played with a limited roster, takes matches like this on as learning experiences, said Knights coach Cassandra Gustafson. “West Iron’s team is really talented and experienced. So even though we had some tough losses we learned a great deal from playing them.”

“I was glad that we were able to get a full regular season in and now it’s on to the UP tournament next week, Wednesday. We have lots to work on and keeping the girls motivated is going to be the key without a GNC tournament,” Serbentas said.

The Wykons finished the regular season at 7-6-1. Norway returns to action on Thursday, hosting Munising in the Knights’ final regular season match.
