Wykon netters blanked by Marquette, 8-0

MARQUETTE — In Great Northern Conference girls tennis action, West Iron was defeated by Marquette 8-0 at Marquette Senior High School on Wednesday.

“We showed some marked improvement in the singles between yesterday and today. Very competitive scores with several tiebreakers,” said Wykons coach Joe Serbentas

“Playing teams like Westwood and Marquette in back to back days will make us better tennis players. We still need to gain experience in winning some of these close sets,” Serbentas said.

The players in the match had to deal with 17 mph winds off of Lake Superior. Serbentas noted that WIC No. 1 and No. 2 doubles played some really good points on a very windy day.

The Wykons have their third road match in as many days today, when they travel to GNC foe Gladstone. West Iron slips to (1-5) on the season.

For the remainder of the season, Serbentas offered this team outlook:

“We lost a lot of strength in the doubles and have our work cut out for us with a very inexperienced doubles lineup. Livea (Mazurek) No. 1 singles and Tori (Bociek) No. 1 doubles, will provide stability at the top of each lineup.

There will be a lot of bumps along the way this season with six new girls in our lineup. How well our new varsity players round out our depth will determine our end of the year success,” he said.

The Wykons were U.P. runner up to Westwood in 2019.

Key losses to graduation are:

Eden Golliher — No. 1 doubles

Emily Nelson — No. 2 doubles

Anna Malmquist — No. 2 doubles

Kali Dennis — No. 2 singles

Olivia Prudhomme — No. 4 singles

Alyssa Dominici — No. 4 doubles
