Johnson, Millan power Florence
Bobcats take down conference leader Laona-Wabeno, 72-51
FLORENCE, Wis. — Sophomore point guard Evan Johnson recorded a triple double of 24 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists, while junior Patrick Millan registered a double double of 20 points and 17 rebounds as Florence thumped the Northern Lakes Conference’s first-place team Laona-Wabeno 72-51 here Friday night.
Bobcats freshman William Kelley netted 21 points, with 15 coming off of five trifectas. That’s 13 made three pointers for Kelly in the last two games, as he drained eight of them in the Bobcats’ 73-59 win over Goodman-Pembine at Pembine High School Tuesday night.
“Tonight was a great win against a great team,” said Florence head coach Bryan Bomberg. “Evan (Johnson) played the best game of his two-year varsity career tonight. He saved his best game for the time we needed it.”
The Rebels, who were 11-0 in the NLC coming into the game, had defeated Florence twice already this season, 64-59 on Dec. 28 at Wabeno High school, and 60-52 on Jan. 28 at Laona High School.
Florence played a box-and-one on Rebels leading scorer Connor Taylor. Sophomore Dominic DeMuri mainly guarded Taylor, and Johnson did as well.
“DeMuri did tremendous job on him,” Bomberg said.
“Willam (Kelley) is hitting the shots we need him to hit. We’ve done some things to get him open, things we’ve recently worked on in practice,” Bomberg added.
The Rebels had three players in double figures, led by Clayton Janeseh with 18 points. Matt Seeber chipped in 12 points, while Reed Christiansen added 11 points. There was no JV contest.
The Bobcats, who improve to 13-4 on the season (11-2 NLC), travel to NLC foe Phelps on Tuesday. On Thursday, Florence finishes their regular season by hosting Three Lakes in a NLC matchup.
