Mountaineers in command

IRON MOUNTAIN — Senior Foster Wonders led all scorers with 25 points, along with smothering team defense, as Iron Mountain powered past rival Norway, 55-19 in a non-conference boys basketball matchup.

Iron Mountain was running its half court offense, mainly with many ball screens in order to set up Wonders or anyone else who got open to get the best look at the basket. Norway struggled throughout the majority of the game on the offensive end, due to the stifling Mountaineer defense.

Both teams played a man-to-man defense throughout the game.

“I thought right from the get go, our defense was great,” said IM head coach Harvey “Bucky” Johnson. “Anytime you hold a team to 19 points in a game, you’re doing something good.

“This is what this team needs to do, is play defense the way we did tonight. They’re athletic enough to do it, and they are all versatile. This may be the most versatile team I have had.”

Another aspect of the game where Iron Mountain was dominant was rebounding, out boarding the Knights 32-13, with 18 offensive rebounds. The Mountaineers also only turned the ball over six times in the game.

“They really did disrupt our offensive flow in anything we tried to run,” said Norway head coach Jeff Gallino. “Their team defense was incredible tonight, and it probably will be all year. We’re gonna go back to practice and figure some things out, hopefully we’ll get better going forward.”

Iron Mountain (2-0, 1-0 West PAC, 0-0 Mid Pen) remains home to host Gwinn Friday night in a dual conference matchup.

Norway (1-1, 1-0 Skyline Central) returns home to host Skyline foe Stephenson, Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. Senior Gannon Bray led the Knights with five points in the game.

Behind a game high 26 points from Reece Kangas, Iron Mountain won the JV contest 57-45. Norway was led by Alec Ortman with 12 points.
