MHSAA girls tourney tips off Monday

IRON MOUNTAIN — The MHSAA postseason girls basketball tournament begins Monday.

In a Division 2 (Class B) district, Kingsford travels to Houghton on Monday for a 5 p.m. Central time tip-off. The Lady Gremlins defeated the Flivver girls on Friday at Kingsford.

The winner will host the district championship game Wednesday against the winner of Monday’s Escanaba at Gladstone game. The regional semifinal is at Manistique on March 29, with the regional final at Houghton Lake on March 31.

There are three area teams in a Division 3 (Class C) district tournament, hosted by Iron Mountain. Head coach Joe Tinti and the Norway girls will travel to play rival Iron Mountain on Monday at 6 p.m. The Mountaineers and first-year head coach Karen Ellis won at Norway on Feb. 18.

The winner of Norway vs. Iron Mountain will determine the sight of Wednesday night’s semifinal game. Norway would travel to face the winner of Monday’s Bark River-Harris at West Iron matchup, while the Lady Mountaineers would continue to host each game they’re in, as the host of the district. The Lady Broncos and the Wykons also tip off at 6 p.m. Central time.

On the top of that bracket, Gwinn travels to Manistique on Monday, with the winner to host No. 1-seed undefeated Menominee on Wednesday. The winner of Gwinn-Manistique vs. Menominee winner hosts the district final March 26.

The regional semifinal for the two U.P. Division 3 districts is at Marquette Senior High School on March 29, with the final is at Sault Ste. Marie on March 31.

In Division 4 (Class D), North Central travels to Republic-Michigamme on Monday at 6 p.m. Central. The winner of that contest will travel to No. 2 seed North Dickinson on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

The winner of Wednesday’s game at the Carl F. Lemin Jr. Gymnasium in Felch will host the district finals on March 26.

On the bottom of that bracket, Forest Park and head coach Kim Bjork will travel to district host Stephenson at 7 p.m. on Monday. The winner will host No. 1-seed undefeated Carney-Nadeau on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

The Division 4 regional semifinal game for the North Central, North Dickinson and Forest Park girls district winner is at Westwood High School on March 29, while the championship game is on March 31 at Gladstone.
