IRON RIVER — Justin Nelson scored 33 points as West Iron ousted Gwinn 61-43 in an MHSAA Division 3 boys basketball opener Tuesday.

The Wykons led 35-15 at halftime, though Gwinn cut the margin to 46-21 entering the fourth.

Gwinn’s roster was affected by COVID-19 quarantines, Wykons coach Dan Schive said.

“They came here undermanned,” he said. “They played hard. They really had no answer for Justin.”

The Modeltowners managed 10 3s on the night, but only a handful of buckets in the paint.

Nathan Thomson added 10 points for West Iron.

The Wykons (10-7) travel to Iron Mountain on Thursday.
