MARQUETTE — It was a beautiful day for baseball in the Upper Peninsula on Monday afternoon and both the Marquette and Kingsford teams took advantage of the weather to put on a nice show for their fans.
In the end, it was the Flivvers who came out on top as they plated three runs in the top of the third inning and got a nice outing from Henry McRoberts on the mound to take down the Redmen, 4-2.
“It’s a nice road win for us. We continue to tell the boys that when we eliminate our walks and errors, we are a tough team that can have a lot of success,” said Kingsford head coach Matt LaLonde. “Henry McRoberts pitched a great game for us today. He was on and did a great job of getting out of innings.”
With the game scoreless in the third, Kingsford started to get its offense going. A base hit by Dennis Neuens scored Nathan Bousley to get the Flivvers on the scoreboard and just one pitch after he smashed a window with a foul ball, Nolan LaVarnway smacked a single to left that brought Neuens home. LaVarnway later scored on a throwing error to put Kingsford up 3-0.
Marquette answered in the fourth. After Erik Johnson tripled to lead off the inning, he came around to score on a fielder’s choice by Brady Wright. The Redmen had a chance to add on more runs, but couldn’t score with two men on and two outs.
Up 3-1 in the fifth, the Flivvers padded their lead. Bousley led off the inning with a walk. After stealing second, he scored on a single by Neuens to make it 4-1 Kingsford.
Marquette started to click offensively in the sixth inning as it tried to trim its deficit. Wright led off with an infield single, stole second and then moved to third on a wild pitch. With one out, Wright scored on a fielder’s choice and the Redmen trailed just 4-2. However, that’s the closest they could get.
McRoberts picked up the win on the hill, giving up five hits and two walks with five strikeouts, while Johnson got tagged with the loss for the Redmen, giving up three runs on two hits with one walk and two strikeouts in four innings of work.
“Nathan Bousley tracked down a fly ball tonight that would have made a lot of outfielders jealous. That helped keep our momentum rolling. It was impressive enough that he caught the baserunners off guard and made it into a double play,” LaLonde stated.
The Flivvers return to action today as they travel to Escanaba for another Great Northern Conference matchup.
