KINGSFORD — Twin City rivals Iron Mountain and Kingsford took to Commemorative Field in Kingsford Tuesday evening for a girls soccer matchup. It was the host Flivvers who powered past Iron Mountain, 8-1.

Kingsford came out with very good intensity right from the opening kick. They generated some pretty good chances early on and kept the ball on the offensive third for much of the first 10 minutes.

The first goal came four minutes into the game as Maria Fornetti made a one-touch goal off of a perfect Liz Penegor cross. Erika Malone kept things rolling for the Flivvers with their second goal, off an assist by Fornetti.

The Flivvers finished the first half with two more insurance goals to go into halftime with a four-goal lead.

“What I really liked about that first half was that all four goals were assisted and set up by some nice passing. The girls are playing unselfish and celebrating each other, which is very nice to see,” Kingsford head coach Jon Lorenzoni said.

The second half was a little different at the beginning as Iron Mountain came out with some good intensity. IM drew a penalty in the goalie box and Abby Richer converted that into a score.

Kingsford then responded with two quick goals from Brooke Bittinger and Malone to pretty much put the game out of reach.

“I thought Maria Fornetti was absolutely awesome tonight. Liz Penegor had a goal and three assists. Brooke and Taylor (DeMay) were terrific in the middle and our defense was great,” Lorenzoni said. “Great team win.”

Kingsford improved to 2-0-1 on the season, as they travel to Marquette on Thursday. Iron Mountain, 1-1, will host Marinette on Monday.

Iron Mtn: 0 1 –1

Kingsford: 4 4 — 8

Goals – Kingsford: Maria Fornetti (3), Erika Malone (3), Liz Penegor, Brooke Bittinger

IM: Abby Richer
