Iron Mountain softball sweeps Gwinn

Powell, Mongrain, Bal lead the way in 4-inning victories

IRON MOUNTAIN — In a girls softball doubleheader Friday, Iron Mountain powered past Gwinn 37-1 and 15-0 in two four- inning games at Northside Field.

Mountaineers sophomore Ellison Powell hit three inside-the-park home runs in game one, while senior Claire Mongrain pitched all four innings, striking out nine batters.

“The girls were hitting the ball well, with excellent base running,” said IM head coach Bruce Tapio. “Gwinn is a young team of all underclassmen, who didn’t give up despite the score of the games”

In game two, Mongrain hit two inside-the-park home runs.

Freshman Ashlyn Bal toed the mound for the Mountaineers in game two, pitching a four-inning perfect game. She fanned eight of the 12 batters she faced.

Tapio noted that IM freshman Zoey Bloomquist played catcher for both games, and did a great job with no passed balls.

“The girls played hard both games and were enthusiastic. It was a fun two games,” Tapio said.

The Mountaineers return to action on Monday as they travel to Westwood , before hosting Ishpeming on Tuesday in a makeup game from April 26.
