Kingsford sweeps Negaunee

NEGAUNEE — Kingsford swept a non-conference baseball doubleheader from Negaunee, winning 9-4 in the opener and 15-2 in four innings in the second game.

“It was a slow start and a fast finish for us in Negaunee on Thursday afternoon,” said Flivvers coach Matt LaLonde. “We were sluggish to start out, both offensively and defensively. We seemed anxious at the plate, which helped Negaunee’s starting pitcher get out of innings quickly with minimal pitches.”

A four-run fourth inning gave Kingsford a 5-3 lead in the opener.

“Our message to the boys is that we need to play with emotion in the entirety, not just when things are going well,” LaLonde said.

Sawyer Pugh pitched five innings, giving up four hits, five walks, and striking out seven. Riley Juneau came on in the sixth and pitched a gem of an inning, recording three outs on seven pitches, LaLonde noted.

Kingsford recorded 12 hits, including three from Nolan LaVarnway.

Henry McRoberts, Pugh, and Juneau had two hits apiece, while Dennis Neuens, Carter Kreski, and Nic Nora each had one.

“Once we settled in and focused on playing ‘our game’ especially at the plate, that’s when the success started to come,” LaLonde said.

In game two, Kreski threw a four-inning complete game. He gave up six hits, two walks and fanned five.

At the plate, Kingsford cracked nine hits, led by Pugh and Jack Bartolac, each with two.

The Flivvers have two Great Northern Conference road games to start next week, at Marquette on Monday and at Escanaba on Tuesday.
