Knights take pair from Superior Central

NORWAY — Junior pitcher Kali Stanchina pitched a five-inning one-hitter and scored four runs as Norway powered past Superior Central 13-0 in game one of a Skyline Central Conference softball doubleheader Friday afternoon at Marion Park in Norway.

Sophomore Hannah Burklund drove in five runs, and had two triples for the Lady Knights. MacKenzie Gilroy had a triple and a double, while Averie Popp was 2-3 with 3 RBI’s.

Stanchina, who also hit a triple, struck out eight Lady Cougars, while only walking one batter.

“Bats were alive tonight despite the weather conditions. Nice to see time spent on the batting tees paying off,” said Norway head coach Bob Bal. “Very happy with the way we played in game one.”

In the nightcap, Norway completed the sweep with a 16-10 win.

“Game 2 we learned some things we need to work on in practice. All in all it was a good night,” Bal added.

Burklund, who pitched game two for Norway, hit a triple. Gilroy also tripled, drove in three runs and scored twice.

Taylor Adams recorded 2 RBI’s, while Donna VanHolla and Andi Carlson each scored three runs.

Today at Lodal Park in Kingsford at 9 a.m., Norway will play Marquette, while Kingsford will play Rapid River. The winners of each game will play at 11 a.m., while the losers of the two preliminary games will play one another, also at 11 a.m.
