ISHPEMING — By a 14.5-point margin, Norway’s boys track team took the MHSAA Upper Peninsula Division 2 Regional 44 track and field championship trophy back to Dickinson County on Friday.

The Knights outscored host Ishpeming 53.5 to 39 at the Ishpeming Playgrounds.

“Some huge first place finishes today with some of the boys with their best times of the season thus far,” said Norway boys track coach Al Trudeau. “Our relays were great also, and field events were awesome. Lots of the boys headed to the U.P. Finals after today.”

Norway won the 800 and 400 meter relays. Gabe Hautamaki, Jeffrey VanHolla, Zach Seat and Bryce Neuens won the 800 relay, while Hautamaki, VanHolla, Seat and Wyatt Richter won the 400.

Seat won the long jump, while Richter won the 300 hurdles and the pole vault. Aiden Richards won the discus for the Knights.

Also a dual race winner for Norway was Adam Cavaghetto, who won the 1600 and 800 meter runs. The Knights have only 10 boys on their roster.

“Don’t forget also we had two weeks off for the high school shutting down due to COVID-19. We had three practices and started our meets. We’ve been lucky to get one or two practices each week since then, it’s unreal how these boys have performed,” Trudeau said.

Ishpeming won the girls title, 59.5-50 over St. Ignace. Norway finished with six team points.
