KINGSFORD — West Iron County dominated the MHSAA Division 2 boys tennis championships Thursday afternoon at the Kingsford High School Tennis Facility.

The Wykons, who have a senior-heavy roster, won every flight except one. West Iron finished with 23 points, runner-up Westwood with 13 and the host Iron Mountain with 10 points for third place, followed by Ishpeming with seven points and Gwinn with three.

The event took place at various courts in the Iron Mountain-Kingsford area.

David Juul of Iron Mountain gave No. 1 singles champ Nolan Anderson a decent match in the finals.

Anderson, who only lost one match all season, was happy with winning the U.P.s as a senior. “This is a good way to go out, I have never won U.P.s before. So I am glad I could do it,” Anderson said.

All the flight scores in the Wykons matches were won mostly by significant margins as well. The lone flight not won by the Wykons was No. 1 doubles, which went to Westwood Patriots’ Garrett Mann and Ryan Lafountain, 6-2, 3-6, 7-5.

With 10 seniors, veteran West Iron head coach Joe Serbentas expected his team to fare well in the event.

“You come into these type of tournaments and every school has at least one strength throughout the flights,” Serbentas said. “We’ve been steady and deep throughout the lineup all season. We’ve never had as strong of a performance in U.P.s as we did today, as long as I have been coaching.”

For Iron Mountain, Brenden LaPoint at No. 2 singles and the duo of Blake Julian and Fulton Stroud at No. 4 doubles were also runners-up.

“I’m proud of all my guys for the way they competed today. With eight freshmen, we are a very young team. To earn a third place finish at U.P.s, including three individual second places, is a testament to how much we have improved throughout the season,” Iron Mountain head coach Marcus Celello said.

“Our one senior, Blake Julian, will be missed next year, but I look forward to bringing everybody else back. I think we will be competitive next year now that everybody has at least a year of experience,” Celello added.
