Wykons netters stymie Kingsford, 5-3

STAMBAUGH — In what was both teams’ opening Great Northern Conference match of the season and the guest Flivvers’ opening match of the entire season, West Iron defeated Kingsford, 5-3, in girls tennis action Thursday morning at the Nelson Field Tennis courts in Stambaugh.

“This morning was our third match in four days with heat becoming a factor as the match progressed through the day. Because of the heat, coach Rutter and I decided to have the girls play third set super tie breaks in lieu of a full set,” said West Iron head coach Joe Serbentas. “Many of the scores were very close and this match could have went either way.”

It was very hot and humid, despite the match beginning at 10 a.m.

The singles flights were a 2-2 tie, but it was the Wykons who won three of the four doubles matches to seal the team win.

“Kingsford was a very good opponent to play and will be tougher later in the season,” Serbentas added.

Kingsford No. 2 singles player Jenna Olkkonen returns the ball back to West Iron's Brynlee Nodurft in Thursday's Great Northern Conference match at the Nelson Field Tennis Courts in Stambaugh. Nodurft defeated Olkkonen in straight sets.

Kingsford (0-1) is again coached this season by Tracy Rutter for the third consecutive year. “The girls played extremely well today. The first match of the season is always full of nerves. The scores do not reflect how well they played, especially battling the heat,” Rutter said. “Overall I’m very pleased with how today went. New comers at No. 4 doubles came out with a win this afternoon. I am looking forward to our season.”

NOTE: The Kingsford Invitational which was originally scheduled for 9 a.m. today will now be on Friday, Aug. 27, at 9 a.m. at the Kingsford High School Tennis Facility.

Both teams return to action on Monday as they stay in the GNC with matches versus Marquette. The Flivvers Monday match with the Redettes is location to be determined, while the Wykons (2-1) are scheduled to host Marquette at 3:30 p.m. in Stambaugh.
