Flivvers ace Gladstone

Serving, front row play benefits Kingsford in GNC volleyball

KINGSFORD — Strong serving, front row play and court awareness from the host Flivvers powered them past Great Northern Conference opponent Gladstone, 3-0 (25-10, 25-12, 25-4) Thursday evening at the Kingsford Middle School Gymnasium.

Right from the get-go, Kingsford’s strong serving got them out to a lead that the Braves couldn’t overcome. The Flivvers’ communication was also key.

Gladstone, who has a small roster, also has many girls playing in positions new to them this season.

Kingsford’s serving was led by freshman Madelynn Kreider, with five aces, and seniors Allie LaVarnway and Danika Varda, four aces each. Plus, the strong serving and hitting of seniors Abby Terrian and Grace Roberts made the serve receive aspect of the game a struggle for Gladstone.

“Tonight our serve receive wasn’t good at all, it tends to be a weak point for us,” said Gladstone head coach Averi Kanyuh. “We tend to shut down when things start going bad for us in that aspect. We lacked communication tonight as well, we basically didn’t show up to play tonight.”

Terrian as well as Zoie Geronimi played exceptionally well in the front row, noted Kingsford head coach Jaclynn Kreider.

“Danika (Varda) served really well tonight, we basically did as a team in the match,” coach Kreider said. “Gladstone was struggling with serve receive and our girls were aware of it and took advantage. When we were able to get some free balls to make plays on, the girls hitting was very strong,” coach Kreider added. “Our tempo of the game had them on their heels, especially off of Abby’s (Terrian) strong hitting.”

The Flivvers also won the jayvee and freshmen matches to complete the clean sweep of the Braves The JV won, 3-0 (25-11, 25-6, 15-5), while the freshmen won, 3-0 (25-12, 25-18, 15-7).

The Flivvers return to action on Saturday in the Redette Rumble Tournament at Marquette Senior High School, before traveling to non-conference foe Negaunee on Thursday.
