Menominee, North Central remain No. 1’s in UPSSA grid poll

NEGAUNEE — Menominee, who took over the top spot in last week’s 11-player poll, remains in the same spot in this week’s Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters U.P. Football poll. Head coach Joe Noha and the Maroons received two first place votes from the voting panel, while second place Marquette received a first place vote as well.

Negaunee and Westwood, who will play on Friday in West Ishpeming to wrap up the regular season, remain tied at No. 3 and each received a first place vote as well. Calumet and head coach John Croze remain at No. 5 this week.

Undefeated and defending MHSAA Division 2 state champion North Central remains the No. 1 team on the 8-player side. The Jets are also the top-ranked team in the state in this week’s AP Prep State Football Poll in all of 8-player.

Forest Park dropped one spot to No. 3 in the 8-player U.P. poll after a 36-6 loss to Lake Linden-Hubbell on Saturday at Ron Warner Field. The Lakes enter the poll for the first time this season at No. 4, while Munising comes in at No. 5 this week, falling one spot.

Next weeks poll will be the final one of the season, with the MHSAA playoffs beginning on Oct. 29 and 30. The playoff selection show will be on Bally Sports Detroit on Sunday at 4:30 p.m. Central.

The UPSSA’s five-voter panel for the 2021 football season is: Jason Juno, Ironwood Daily Globe; Rob Roos of the Sault Evening News; John Vrancic of the Escanaba Daily Press; Mike Ludlum of WLUC-TV6 and Matt “Sweets” McCarthy of the Iron Mountain Daily News.
