Flivvers drop third straight 9-2 at De Pere
DE PERE, Wis. — Like all hockey teams, the Flivvers fare far better when they can possess the puck and keep shots at their goal to a minimum.
Unfortunately, Kingsford has not been able to accomplish those things in recent games, including the Flivvers’ 9-2 setback against the De Pere Voyageurs on Tuesday at the De Pere Ice Arena.
The Voyageurs, a co-op team comprised of players from De Pere and West De Pere high schools, peppered Kingsford goalie Brett Berglund with 63 shots, while the Flivvers managed only 16 shots against two De Pere goalies.
In their 8-2 loss to Marquette on Dec. 21, the Flivvers gave up 51 shots on goal compared to 14 for themselves.
The Flivvers (2-6) did hang with De Pere for the first 17 minutes.
The Voyageurs opened the scoring with a goal by forward Zach VanWychen, assisted by linemates Sam Thompson and John Merkatoris with 12:20 left in the opening period. De Pere added to its advantage about five minutes later when Tanner Newton put one past Berglund to push his team’s lead to 2-0.
Kingsford answered just 23 seconds later, when Jake Crockford cut the Flivver deficit in half with a goal off assists by Hunter Fortner and Caleb Fornetti.
Less than two minutes later, De Pere went back up by two on Newton’s second tally of the period. But once again the Flivvers had a quick answer when, after just 18 seconds ticked off, Nick Doran sent a shot past De Pere goaltender Keegan Handrick to once again slice the Voyageurs’ lead to one. Doran was assisted by Hart DeBidart and Kurt Ryan.
However, De Pere added its fourth score of the game with 3:21 left in the first period to take a 4-2 edge into the first intermission. De Pere increased its lead to 7-2 with three goals in the second period, one on a power play by Newton, who finished with a hat trick and two assists.
The Voyageurs put up two more goals in the third period to end the scoring.
The Flivvers get nine days off before returning to the ice on Jan. 6 against Escanaba at Mountain View Ice Arena. The Eskymos won the first matchup of the teams 3-1 at Escanaba on Nov. 16 in the Flivvers’ season opener.
