GOODMAN, Wis. — The Goodman-Pembine boys varsity basketball team hadn’t played a game since Jan. 3, so forgive the Patriots if they were a bit sluggish in the first half of their game against Elcho on Tuesday night at Goodman.

But coach Jeff Zerbst’s crew erased its three-point half-time deficit and went on to defeat the Hornets 67-58 in a Northern Lakes Conference battle.

“Hard-fought game on both ends,” Zerbst said. “Credit to Elcho as they came ready to play and brought the physicality. We had not played in 15 days and it showed in the first half as we were rusty and a bit slow.

“We improved in the second half, and our shots started falling, and fortunately for us it was enough to get the win.”

The one-two punch of Boone Larison and Ryan Ehlert led the way for the Patriots (6-2). Ehlert kept his team close in the first half with 15 of his 23 points, while Larison put the coup de grace on the win with 21 of his game-high 26 points after halftime.

The Patriots singed the nets for 11 3-pointers in the game. Ehlert hit five, Larison sank four and Ryan Erickson and Jacob Kessel made one each.

Goodman-Pembine heads back into action tonight with a game at Tomahawk. Then the Patriots get a shot at revenge when they take on Florence on the road on Jan. 25. The Bobcats upended the Patriots 77-71 on Dec. 9 in Pembine.

“It felt good to be back our there again and we are hoping our best ball is still in front of us,” Zerbst said.

Lena’s Beyer sinks Badgers

NIAGARA, Wis. — Lena’s Max Beyer lit up the scoreboard for 35 points, including 21 in the first half, to send the Wildcats to a 62-31 M&O Conference victory over host Niagara on Tuesday night.

Logan Shallow added 14 points, including two triples, for the Wildcats.

The visitors shot out to a 40-19 lead at the break and impressed Badgers’ veteran coach Terry Youren in the process.

“We played a team tonight that played excellent basketball,” he said. “Two very good shooters with great quickness. Nice team.”

Beyer, a senior, is a 1,000-point scorer for Lena, having shot past that mark last February.

Niagara never got on track offensively in the loss. Aiden Colenso topped the Badgers (4-7) with 10 points. He was the Badgers’ lone double-digit scorer.

Nordics knock off Lady Trojans

FELCH — Ashton Hord scored 17 points, while Vanessa Lindholm and Chrislyn Inglese chipped in with 10 each to send North Dickinson to its sixth win in a row, a 46-28 decision over Skyline Central Conference foe Forest Park, in a girls varsity basketball clash Tuesday night.

The Nordics, now ranked No. 5 in the UPSSA Division 4 poll, held the Lady Trojans to one point in the second quarter to take a 24-11 lead into the halftime break.

North Dickinson coach Kirk Mattson said his team wasn’t particularly sharp on the night.

“I thought we were a little bit flat tonight for whatever reason,” Mattson said. “And Forest Park had something to do with that. They were shorthanded but they played hard. (Coach) Kim (Bjork) had her team ready to play us and we had a tough time.”

The Lady Trojans held the Nordics to 2 of 18 from the 3-point line.

Gracie Peterson led Forest Park (1-9) with 10 points, while Lilly Post contributed six and Lauren Kudwa scored five. The Lady Trojans played without starter Rayven Jacobson and reserve Riley Van Sickle.

“We are happy with our effort,” Bjork said afterward. “Our girls are starting to gain some confidence handling pressure defense. North Dickinson is a very good team, they threw a few different defenses at us and offensively they are tough to stop.

“Neither team shot well, but North Dickinson had two big quarters that kept a comeback for us out of reach. I’m very pleased with our team tonight.”

Knights stymie Eagles in victory

NORWAY — The Norway Knights held Stephenson to just six points in the first half and stayed comfortably in front the whole way in their 38-22 Skyline Central Conference victory Tuesday night at Norway High School.

Playing without head coach Joe Tinti, who missed the game with an illness, the Knights (5-5) stopped a three-game losing streak with the victory. Taylor Adams led the way with eight points to go with seven from Hannah Burklund and six from Donna VanHolla.

Lady Badgers notch 9th win

NIAGARA, Wis. — Josie Rock kept up her hot-shooting ways Tuesday night as the junior guard scored 22 points to lead Niagara to a 48-14 nonconference triumph over Goodman-Pembine in Niagara.

Rock knocked down four of her team’s seven 3-pointers on her way to her second consecutive game of 20 or more. Rock scored 24 four nights previous in a loss at Oneida Nation and has exceeded 20 points in five games so far this season.

Rebekah Strietzel topped the Patriots five points and Laynee Dwight added four.

With the win, the Lady Badgers upped their record to 9-5. The Patriots are winless on the season.
