MARQUETTE — Kingsford sophomore Adelaide McRoberts set a new U.P. record in the 50-meter freestyle and added a victory in the 200 individual medley as the Flivvers girls finished third overall at the U.P. Swimming & Diving Finals on Saturday at Marquette High School.
The Redettes won the team title with 418 points, 13 in front of runner-up and defending U.P. champion Sault Ste. Marie, while the Flivvers took third at 202 in the nine-team event.
Meanwhile, the Kingsford boys wound up sixth with 90 points. Marquette also won the boys team trophy with 418, far in front of runner-up Houghton (291).
McRoberts finished the 50 free in 24.22 seconds, defeating Sault Ste. Marie senior Joanne Arbic (24.53), who held the previous record of 24.49.
McRoberts won the 200 IM in 2:11.34, nearly 12 seconds in front of second-place finisher Grace Sobczak of Marquette.
The Flivver sophomore later swam an even faster 50 free (24.11) as part of Kingsford’s second-place 200 free relay with freshman Sierra Scott and seniors Sydney Scott and Samantha Scott.
That same quartet also finished second in the 200 IM relay.
For McRoberts, her second U.P. Finals was quite memorable.
“I was very proud of myself, but more importantly, I was happy with how much my coaches and my team pushed me to get here today,” McRoberts said. “It was kind of crazy considering that I’m not even a freestyler. It was definitely a shock but I was very happy with it.”
Other Flivver individuals finishing in the top five included Samantha Scott (third in the 100 backstroke, fifth in the 200 free), Sydney Scott (fourth in the 100 butterfly and fifth in the 100 backstroke) and Sierra Scott (fifth in the 100 free).
Kingsford’s 400 freestyle relay team of freshman Petra Grubb, junior Alyssa Englund, senior Maggie Menghini and senior Anna Lundholm placed third.
In the boys event, Marquette won all swimming events on its way to the title.
For the Flivver boys, top-five finishers included junior Zane Cahee (fifth in the 200 IM), Kaden Matuszewski (fifth in the 100 breaststroke), the 200 freestyle relay team of Cahee, junior Pierre Hurtubise, junior Kaden Matuszewski and senior Evan Tregillis and the 400 freestyle relay squad of sophomore Thomas Lundholm, junior Bryce Groneveld, junior Michael Mulligan and Tregillis. Both relay teams placed fifth.
