Sass maintains lead in Iditarod
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Brent Sass continued to lead the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race on Sunday, but he must hold off the defending champion as mushers have reached the Bering Sea sea coast and its treacherous ice.
Sass breezed through the checkpoint in the village of Shaktoolik on Sunday morning, staying only eight minutes. The village is 754 miles (1,213 kilometers) into the nearly 1,000-mile (1,609-kilometer) race, and the winner is expected to cross the finish line in Nome on Tuesday or Wednesday.
According to GPS trackers each musher carries, Sass had a lead of just over 10 miles (16 kilometers) on Dallas Seavey, who tied Rick Swenson for the most Iditarod victories at five with his 2021 Iditarod win.
The world’s most famous sled dog race began with 49 mushers on March 6 in Willow, about 75 miles (121 kilometers) north of Anchorage. Since then, four have withdrawn from the race.
Warriors beat Bucks 122-109
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Klay Thompson has been waiting for his shot to start falling consistently, and he certainly found a groove for Golden State against defending champion Milwaukee.
Thompson scored a season-best 38 points, raising his right arm in triumph to ignite the home crowd and leading the Warriors past the Bucks, 122-109 on Saturday night.
Thompson shot 15 for 24 with eight 3-pointers had his second 30-point performance since returning Jan. 9 from a two-year absence following knee and Achilles surgeries.
Milwaukee native Jordan Poole returned to Golden State’s starting lineup and scored 30 points with five 3-pointers to go with six rebounds and five assists.
Giannis Antetokounmpo had 31 points and eight rebounds, but the Warriors’ defense held the rest of the Bucks down. Milwaukee had won six a row.
Flames blank Detroit 3-0
CALGARY, Alberta (AP) — Elias Lindholm scored his 30th goal, a career high, and Jacob Markstrom made 19 saves for his league-leading ninth shutout to lead the Calgary Flames to a 3-0 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday night.
Tyler Toffoli and Blake Coleman also scored for Calgary (36-15-7), which entered the game in first place in the Pacific Division, five points up on the Los Angeles Kings with two games in hand.
Detroit (24-28-7) is winless in its last five (0-4-1).
Thomas Greiss, who was under siege most of the night, finished with 40 stops. He is 8-10-1.
NOTES: Detroit defenseman Marc Staal played in his 1,000th career game. Marc, Eric (1,293) and Jordan (1,070) became the first trio of brothers to all play 1,000 games. … Referee Dean Morton worked his final game before retiring. It comes in the building in which, as a Red Wings defenseman, he played his only NHL game and scored a goal on Oct. 5, 1989.
