DETROIT — The Iron Mountain wrestling team had plenty to celebrate as nine Mountaineers drove back from the MHSAA individual state finals held Friday and Saturday at Ford Field in Detroit, including a pair of state championships.

Senior Parker Stroud (41-6) ended his prep career by winning a state title at 152 pounds, while teammate junior Shawn McGuire (39-2), who was a finals runner-up his freshman year, won the 119-pound championship.

Parker capped off the tournament with a 11-9 decision over Hemlock’s Josh Collins.

“This match went back and forth through the second and third periods,” Iron Mountain coach Cory McLaren said. “This was not Parker’s best match he has wrestled, but he dug deep and found a way to win.

“Parker is now a four-time state (medalist) and the first Mountaineer to do it,” McLaren added.

McGuire, meanwhile, had to battle an opponent who knows him very well — fellow Mountaineer Tyler Winch (32-14). The title match pitted the two Iron Mountain wrestlers against each other, with McGuire winning the match 5-0 and Winch taking home a second-place medal.

“They both wrestled hard from the start of the whistle,” McLaren said. “This was a bittersweet match to watch, knowing one will achieve his dreams and the other would not.”

The Iron Mountain trio weren’t alone in bringing home the hardware from Ford Field.

Evan Haferkorn (40-8) battled his way to a fourth-place finish at 145 pounds, making it the second time he’s medaled in the state tournament. Not only did Haferkorn win a medal, he also recorded his 100th career when he pinned St. Louis’ Martine Wiggins.

Other Iron Mountain medalists included Fulton Stroud (fifth at 171 pounds, 34-7), Mason Kivi (sixth place at 152 pounds, 25-10) and Alex Wilson (eighth place at 103 pounds, 34-11),

“This was just a crazy year,” McLaren said. “So proud of this team and how they battled this weekend. To get three in finals was amazing enough.

“(Parker Stroud) was our first state champions since state finals were statewide since 2008,” the coach added. “This was our most state placers we have every had with seven.”
