Flivver boys bring home regional trophy

NEGAUNEE — Led by five individual victories and three relays wins, the Kingsford boys varsity track and field team outperformed the field and brought home the hardware from the MHSAA Division 1 Regional 42 invitational on Thursday at Negaunee High School.

The Flivvers also logged four runner-up finishes on their way to amassing 67 points, 15 in front of second-place Houghton. Calumet (33), Negaunee (30) and Westwood (5) also competed.

In the girls team standings, Kingsford finished fifth with 13 points behind champion Negaunee (78.5), Houghton (48.5), Westwood (25) and Calumet (22).

Top four finishers in all events qualified for the U.P. Finals, which will be held at Kingsford High School on Saturday, June 4.

For the Flivver boys, individual winners included Michael Floriano (23.51 in the 200), Diego Przeslakowski (41.62 in the 300 hurdles), Conor Quick (5-8 in the high jump), Lucas Tappy (46-2.5 in the shot put) and Noah Johnson (137-9 in the discus).

Kingsford also dominated the relays, winning the 400, the 800 and the 1,600. Trestan Larson, Cole Myllyla, Floriano and Przeslakowski (44.76 in the 400), Larson, Brody Kopp, Meneguzzo and Przeslakowski (1:34.98) and Larson, Kopp, Meneguzzo and Morton (3:44.78) in the 1,600 did the honors.

Junior Erika Malone paced the Flivver girls with their lone individual victory, which came in the long jump (15-8.5). She also finished second in the 100 (13.68) and contributed to the runner-up 800 relay squad along with Lexie Vross, Addie Rutter and Talia Wallis.
