KINGSFORD — Last week, the Kingsford varsity football team stood tied with host Gladstone at 20-all heading into the fourth quarter. The Flivvers ended up losing 34-20.
This week, Kingsford led visiting Wausau West 14-6 entering the final frame, but again struggled down the stretch. The Warriors scored four touchdowns in the fourth quarter while holding the Flivvers scoreless as Kingsford’s record fell to 1-2 after a 34-14 nonconference setback at Flivver Field
Ray Reineck ran for 162 yards and three touchdowns to help Wausau West continue its undefeated start to the season. Landon Parlier had a 3-yard touchdown run in the first quarter to give the Warriors a 6-0 lead before the Flivvers scored touchdowns in the second and third quarters to pull ahead 14-6.
Reineck had TD runs of 7, 10 and 49 yards in the first three minutes of the fourth quarter, and Vince Hanz connected with Ethan Steinbach for a 8-yard score later in the period for the Warriors.
The Flivvers will remain home for their next game on Friday, Sept 16 against Great Northern Conference foe Marquette. The Redmen are also 1-2 heading into the game.
BOBCATS 46, PENGUINS 0
PLAINFIELD, Wis. — Florence scored 24 first quarter points and led 40-0 at the half while cruising to a 46-0 win over host Tri-County in 8-player football Friday.
Will Kelley connected on a scoring pass to Logan Schuls for the game’s first points and the Bobcats’ Will Sipple blocked a punt near Tri-County’s goal line on the Penguins’ first possession that led to a short Schuls TD run in a lopsided first quarter.
Florence’s Schuls and Evan Johnson both ran for two touchdowns before halftime. Joey Holmstrom added a rushing TD late for Florence’s last score.
“They (Tri-County) had a limited number of players available to start with, and then their quarterback went out of the game early and that did them in,” said Florence head coach Kent Walstrom. “We’ve been on that end of things, not having players available and having to play guys out of their natural position, and that’s no fun. At least it sounded like their QB would be OK.”
Florence (2-1) saw defending state champion Newman Catholic dismantle 4th-ranked Laona-Wabeno, the Bobcats’ next opponent, 49-14 on Saturday.
“They went like a buzz saw through the best teams in our conference,” Walstrom noted. “Laona-Wabeno has a pretty good football team with a good core of seniors. Newman may not play a competitive game this season until the playoffs, and maybe not then.”
Laona-Wabeno (2-1) travels to Florence to play the Bobcats Friday night in the conference opener for both teams. Game time at Robert Landry Field is 7 p.m.
EAGLES 50, BADGERS 6
NIAGARA — The Almond-Bancroft Eagles were flying high as they dominated host Niagara for a 50-6 win in the 8-player varsity football clash Friday.
Both teams now sport 1-2 records on the 2022 season.
Despite the loss, the Badgers were able to give their fans a few highlights. That included the play of Logan Weber, who tallied 87 yards of total offense and a passing touchdown. Aiden Colenso had a 29 yard touchdown reception, along with an interception while on defense.
Christian Hedmark led Niagara defensively with eight tackles and causing a pair of fumbles.
Niagara will look to battle back to the .500 mark when they travel to face White Lake-Elcho on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. CDT.
TROJANS 54, NORDICS 16
FELCH — The Forest Park Trojans stayed undefeated on the season with an impressive 54-16 trouncing of host North Dickinson on Thursday.
“We came out and executed well,” said Forest Park head coach Brian Fabbri. “We gave up a quick touchdown on a missed coverage, something that we’re going to have to clean up. But overall, I was happy with the team’s performance.”
Trojan running back Sam McKissack torched the Nordics for 226 yards rushing and four touchdowns on just 12 carries, while also completing a pass for seven yards.
Forest Park quarterback Payton Woollard was a perfect 3 for 3 for 61 yards passing in the 8-player contest.
Despite the loss, Nordics freshman Spencer Kramer continued to thrill his fans by tallying 159 yards Thursday. In just three games, he has 430 yards receiving and has scored in each contest, including the Nordics’ second TD late in the second half versus the Trojans.
Antonio Inglese paced North Dickinson defensively with 11 tackles.
