Road warriors: Mountaineers shut out host Patriots 34-0

ISHPEMING — The Iron Mountain varsity football team is back at the .500 mark.

After an season-opening loss to host Negaunee, the visiting Mountaineers (1-1) bounced back to shutout the Westwood Patriots to win in convincing fashion 34-0 on Thursday in Ishpeming.

Iron Mountain scored in all four quarters, putting up a touchdown in the first stanza before racking up another 12 points in the second for a 19-0 halftime advantage. Then, for good measure, the Mountaineers found the endzone for scores in both the final two quarters of play.

“We got the job done versus Westwood,” said Mountaineer head coach Robin Marttila. “We were effective offensively.”

IM junior running back Luke Wolfe was definitely effective, rushing for a team-high 83 yards on 12 carries and two touchdowns in the road win. Senior Bradon Farragh added 39 yards and a score and Bradon Walstrom chipping in a touchdown on the ground.

Senior quarterback Joe Colavecchi had a solid outing, hitting on six of 10 passing attempts for 121 yards and a score to sophomore tight end Oskar Kangas, who tallied three catches for a team-best 64 yards as Mountaineers racked up 312 yards in total offense.

The Mountaineers had plenty of stars on defense in the shutout of the Patriots. Kangas and Brandon each had one sack on the night, with Walstrom leading Iron Mountain with 11 tackles.

Sophomore defensive end Alec Haferkorn also had a good night with eight hits, including six solo tackles. Farragh had six solo hits, while senior defensive tackle Colin Schneider and fellow defensive lineman junior Connor Owens each had five tackles in the win.

Overall, the Mountaineers held Westwood to just 52 yards rushing and 96 yards through the air.

But Marttila said his squad will face a tough test as they look for their second win of the season when they host Houghton on Friday at Mountaineer Stadium. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.

According to the IM coach, Houghton (2-0) features a “three-headed monster” with solid play at quarterback, running back and wide receiver.

“They’ll be a great challenge,” Marttila said, adding the Mountaineer defenders will have to make sure execute their individual assignments. “The kids will have to do their jobs. We’ll have to play solid ball.”
