Three local flights finish 2nd at GNCs
KINGSFORD — Kingsford recorded runner-up finishes at No. 2 and No. 4 doubles, while West Iron posted one second-place finish in the girls tennis Great Northern Conference championships on Wednesday at Kingsford High School.
Kingsford’s second-doubles duo of Linnea Grubb and Abby Rutter spent more than seven hours on the court and left with a second-place result after defeating Munising 6-1, 6-0 and West Iron’s Autumn Smith and Katelyn Smith 6-1, 7-6 (4) before dropping a tense final against Escanaba 6-7 (2), 7-6 (3), 7-5.
“No. 2 doubles played outstanding today,” Kingsford coach Tracy Rutter said. “Last match in the finals was tough. Mentally they were drained. …”
The Flivvers’ No. 4 doubles team of Libby Vross and Ava Lovell also went 2-1 on the day. They beat Menominee and Escanaba in straight sets before they were defeated by Marquette 6-3, 6-0 in the title match.
“(No.) 4 doubles also did very well today,” Coach Rutter said. “They are a strong team, communicate well and continue to improve with each match.”
For West Iron, junior Seanna Stine led the way with a second-place result at No. 2 singles. Stine advanced to the finals with a straight-set win over Kingsford’s Paige Janousek and a three-set victory over Marquette.
Gladstone’s Tia Schone then ended Stine’s run with a 6-2, 6-1 win in the finals.
Escanaba won the team trophy with 25 points, edging Marquette which finished with 23. Gladstone took third with 11, the Wykons finished fourth with nine points, the Flivvers wound up fifth with eight, Menominee scored four points and finished six and Munising placed seventh having not won a match on the day.
Kingsford is scheduled to close its regular season with a match against Norway today.
On Wednesday, the 2022 girls tennis season comes to a conclusion with the U.P. Finals. The Division 1 championships will be held in Kingsford, while the Division 2 championships will be hosted by Westwood High School.
