Lakeland shuts down Flivvers 1-0
MINOCQUA, Wis. — A first period goal was enough for Lakeland, as the Kingsford Flivvers were shut out for a second straight game in a 1-0 setback Thursday evening at Lakeland Ice Arena.
“The guys played well,” Flivvers head coach Greg Wadge said. “Our compete level was good. We made a few bad decisions in the offensive zone that resulted in poor quality scoring opportunities.”
Aden Thiessen, with assists from Aaron Wanta and Kort Meyer, scored the game’s only goal at 13:25 of the first period. It was an even-strength tally. Flivver netminder Isaiah Anderson shut the Thunderbirds down from there, totaling 37 saves in the contest.
“Isaiah played very well,” Wadge noted.
Lakeland (9-1-0) and Kingsford were facing off for the second time this season. The Thunderbirds earned a comeback victory over the Flivvers, 4-3 on Nov. 19 at Mountain View Ice Arena.
The Thunderbirds committed seven penalties in Thursday’s game, but the Flivvers were unable to capitalize on any power play chances.
The game marked the 11th straight road contest for the Flivvers (7-7-0), who travel to Escanaba for their next contest on Jan. 5, before finally returning home on Jan. 10 to host Hancock.
Escanaba sports a 6-4-0 record on the season, which includes a 3-2 win over Kingsford back on Nov. 22.
