Getting started: Norway drops season-opener 3-1

MARINETTE, Wis. — Spring may have finally sprung, as the Norway Knights varsity baseball team was able to play its season-opener versus the host Marinette Marines on Monday.

The excitement of getting out on the diamond took a hit, however, with the Knights falling 3-1.

“It was great to finally get on a baseball field and I thought our kids competed especially coming off of spring break,” said Norway coach Tony Adams. “We had a lot of positives in this game and things we need to work on.”

The Knights managed just one run on four hits. Though, they actually outhit the Marines, who tallied two hits in garnering the victory. Both team committed a pair of errors.

Brent Lagina led Norway at the plate going 2-for-3, with Landon Amundson (1-3) and Isaac Lorenzoni (1-1) having the team’s other two hits. Cole Baij was 0-2 with a walk.

Austyn Dwight, subbing in for Amundson, scored Norway’s only run in the fourth inning.

“Give their pitcher credit with changing speeds and staying in the strike zone,” Adams said. “On the other hand, their hitters didn’t chase a lot so we need to continue to work winning the strike zone on both sides of the ball.”

Baij started on the mound for the Knights, going two innings. He didn’t allow a hit, but did give up three walks while also fanning three.

Lorenzoni was the next Norway hurler and took the loss, giving up two runs without aid of a hit. He also walked three and struck out a pair.

Alex Ortman closed out the game for Norway, tossing two innings and giving up an unearned run on two hits and a walk. He also fanned three.

Starting at $3.50/week.
