Knights’ offense fuels DH sweep of Nordics
NORWAY — Elizabeth Romitti recorded seven hits in eight at bats to power the Norway Knights to a doubleheader sweep of North Dickinson in Skyline Central Conference play Monday at Marion Park.
In the opener, Romitti ripped two triples among her four hits, knocked in three runs and scored two to lead the Knights to a 10-0 five-inning victory. In the finale, Romitti added three hits in four trips and once again knocked in three runs as Norway outdueled the Nordics 10-5.
In the first game, the Knights scored three times in the bottom of the first, added a run in the third, put up four more in the fourth and ended the game early with three in the fifth.
Donna Van Holla added two hits, including a triple, three RBIs and three runs scored, while Kara Stanchina, Hannah Burklund and Anna Debidart all drove in a run. Jada Freudinger chipped in with a double in the winning effort.
Burklund surrendered just one hit in her five innings of work to get the win. She walked four and struck out 11.
Janessa Chartier took the loss for ND, pitching 4 2/3 innings and allowing five earned runs. She walked one and fanned two.
In the second game, Norway jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two innings, but the Nordics sliced that in half with runs in the third and fourth.
But a five-run fourth put the Knights back in control at 9-2. North Dickinson scored three in the top of the fifth to pull within 9-5, but Norway added an insurance run in the bottom of the frame to account for the final score.
Kara Stanchina lined a double and a triple and knocked in two runs to help power the Knights to the win. Andi Carlson recorded two RBIs, while Van Holla, Debidart and Anna Falk added one each.
For the Nordics, Aiden Hord drove in two runs and Gabby Schultz and Hailee Siegler plated a run each. Dalaney Steinbrecher recorded a double as ND posted five hits in the contest.
Burklund pitched the first inning for the Knights without allowing a hit or a run. Stanchina came on to finish the game, allowing five hits and two runs in six innings. She walked one and fanned seven.
Chartier pitched the second game for the Nordics as well. She gave up 10 hits and seven earned runs while walking three and striking out three.
