They have beaten five tournament opponents by an average of 25 points per game, with the closest margin coming by 14 points.

The Boilermakers are in the title game for the first time since falling to UCLA in 1969 in their lone appearance.

Purdue is winning its tournament games by an average margin of 19.6 points.

AARON ROSE ABOVE RACIST HATE MAIL

ATLANTA (AP) — Former teammates, Braves executives and family members remember Hank Aaron’s unwavering strength despite receiving racist hate mail and threats during his pursuit of Babe Ruth’s home run record.

Teammates including Dusty Baker and Tom House will return Monday as the Braves celebrate the 50th anniversary of Aaron’s record-breaking 715th homer.

Baker was on deck and House caught the record homer in the Braves bullpen before delivering the ball to Aaron at home plate.

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred is expected to attend a preview of a new Aaron exhibit at the Atlanta History Center.

COLLINS WINS AT CHARLESTON OPEN

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Danielle Collins powered to her second straight WTA title, following her Miami Open victory last week with the Charleston Open championship on Sunday.

Collins defeated Daria Kasatkina 6-2, 6-1 for her 13th straight match win. She became the first player since Serena Williams in 2013 to win Miami and Charleston in consecutive weeks.

The 30-year-old Collins has announced that this will be her last year on tour.

She already has made it a memorable one with her consecutive showings.

STRASBURG RETIRES OUT OF THE BLUE

WASHINGTON (AP) — Washington Nationals pitcher Stephen Strasburg has announced his retirement, ending the 2019 World Series MVP’s injury-filled career.

Since leading Washington to its only World Series title five years ago, the 35-year-old pitched just 31 1/3 innings over eight starts.

Strasburg was 113-62 with a 3.24 ERA over 13 seasons and made three All-Star appearances.

He led the National League with 18 victories in 2019 and then delivered a dominant postseason, going 5-0 with a 1.98 ERA over six appearances.

He signed a seven-year, $245 million contract in December 2019 but threw only 528 pitches in the majors since then.

“He was a horse out there on the mound,” Washington manager Dave Martinez said.
