RAPID RIVER — Two days after the North Dickinson Invitation, the Norway, Forest Park, North Central and North Dickinson track teams returned to competition Thursday at a cold and rainy Rapid River Invitational.

Both Manistique squads took home the team trophies in the double-digit field. The top local team finisher was the Trojan boys, who wound up fourth. The Lady Trojans led the girls local teams with a fifth-place result.

In the girls overall team standings, the Nordic girls finished tied for sixth, while the Knights placed ninth. In the boys field, North Central finished tied for seventh, Norway placed 10th and North Dickinson wound up 12th.

The Emerald girls compiled 106 points to defeat Bark River-Harris (95), Newberry (66), Stephenson (51), Forest Park (41.5), North Dickinson (36), Big Bay de Noc (36), Munising (32), Norway (22.5), Rapid River (15), Mid Peninsula (15) and Republic-Michigamme 10.

North Central did not score a team point.

The Manistique boys totaled 122 points to win the team title, followed by Newberry (96), Munising (58), Forest Park (57), Bark River-Harris (56), Rapid River (39), North Central (11), Stephenson (11), Superior Central (9), Norway (8), Holy Name (8), North Dickinson (7), Republic-Michigamme (6), Mid Peninsula (5) and Hannahville Nah Tah Wahsh (3).

In the girls competition, the Nordics earned two victories with Aubrey Applekamp winning the high jump and Mya Grunlund taking the 3,200.

Applekamp and Grunlund also teamed with Jessica Harwath and Raina Ledzian to finish fourth in the 3,200 relay while Aspen Anderson placed fourth in the pole vault.

The Knights were led by Lauren Adams, who placed second in the 200, third in the 400 and contributed to Norway’s third-place 400 relay team with Abby Richter, Elizabeth Romitti and Mary Cavagnetto. Richter also scored points for the Knights with a fifth-place result in the 200.

Forest Park’s Vienna Price had a productive day with a runner-up in the 800 and thirds in both the 1,600 and the 3,200. Lauren Kudwa contributed a third-place result in the shot put, while Haven Van Sickle brought home a third in the 100 hurdles.

Ella Gasperich (discus) and Lily Sarder (long jump) posted fifth-place finishes, as did the 800 relay quartet of Gasperich, Sarder, Van Sickle and Ava Fischer.

In the boys event, Izaiah Tarter (3,200) and Vic Giuliani (high jump) notched individual championships for the Trojans. Giuliani also placed fourth in the long jump, while his brother Kevin posted a third in the discus and a fifth in the shot put.

Dax Huuki and Dietrich Rasner both scored top-five finishes in a pair of events. Huuki took fourth in the 400 and fifth in the 200 and Rasner finished fifth in both hurdles events.

Forest Park also posted a second in the 3,200 relay (Joey Mainville, Max Mainville, William Hoffman and Tarter) and a third in the 1,600 relay (Rasner, Hoffman, Huuki and Vic Guiliani).

North Central’s Lane Gorzinski also produced two top-five results – taking second in the 200 and fifth in the 100.

The Nordics posted two of the top five results in the high jump with Trenton Kramer tying for third and Spencer Kramer finishing fifth.

Anthony Pineda led the Knights with a third in the 300 and a fifth in the 800 relay with Kaleb Lapine, Sean Dowrick and Mason Trudeau.

Norway coach Al Trudeau probably summarized the day for all the coaches.

“We ran against some really great competition tonight,” he said. “Sixteen schools gave us a great look at many teams that are in our division and some that are not in our division that are bigger schools.

“The weather could have been a bit better; also maybe something without a cold rain would be nice. But we are still waiting to get a nice day yet this spring.”
