IRON MOUNTAIN — The Iron Mountain boys tennis team began its three-event week Monday by hosting West Iron County, and by virtue of winning three of the four doubles matches, the Wykons left with a 5-3 victory.

West Iron captured the No. 2, the No. 3 and the No. 4 doubles flights, all in straight sets. The Wykons picked up victories from No. 2 doubles tandem Jackson Strom and Elijah Oberlin, who topped Geno Schinderle and Dylan Lindgren 6-3, 6-3, and from No. 3 duo Keenan Dobson-Donati and Jackson Secord, who downed Ben Truong and Carter Kassin 6-2, 6-2.

Additionally, Matthew Swenski and Mason Ahola defeated Alex Wilson and DiAngelo Saldana 6-2, 7-6 (3) i the fourth doubles flight.

West Iron also notched victories in two singles matches – Caleb Strom knocked off Kaden Sheldon 6-2, 6-1 and Zander Birmingham topped Evan Copley 6-4, 6-3.

The Mountaineers scored wins at No. 3 singles, No. 4 singles and No. 1 doubles. In the doubles match, Reece and Oskar Kangas defeated Colton Holm and Drew Alexa 6-4, 6-4.

In singles, Bryden Kassin posted a 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Dominick Brunswick in the No. 3 flight and Malakai Broersma fought back to defeat James White 2-6, 7-5, 6-3.

“Perfect day for tennis and the matches were very entertaining,” IM coach Keith Huotari said. “West Iron has a strong team and we hung in there and competed.

“I tell the guys all the time that one point here or there can make the difference. Points add up to games and games lead to winning sets and matches. We just need to remain locked in and a few of the tight sets we dropped will turn around.”

The Mountaineers were scheduled to play at Westwood on Tuesday, but the match was cancelled because of rain. Iron Mountain is slated to host Ishpeming on Thursday and to compete in the Kingsford Invitational on Saturday..

“It’s the busiest week of the season for us as we play several good teams, so we’ll need to refocus quickly,” Huotari said.
