Eskymos win close tennis match over Kingsford
KINGSFORD — The Escanaba Eskymos went on the road and earned a 5-3 girls’ tennis victory over the Kingsford Flivvers on Thursday.
“The weather was a bit iffy throughout the evening, but we were able to play 16 jayvees as well as getting our entire varsity meet played,” Esky coach Chris Ogren said. “All of our (varsity) wins were pretty comfortable. Olivia Vogel and Varrah Veeser are used to playing longer matches at No. 2 and 3 singles, but both were able to win quickly.”
Vogel took a 6-1, 6-0 decision from Alice Hall in the No. 2 match and Veeser topped Maddy Zeuske 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3.
“On the doubles side, I liked what I was seeing from Katie Kievit and Carly Gorenchan at No. 4 doubles,” Ogren said. After a very close 6-4 win in the first set, they were able to clean things up in the second set and won much quicker, 6-1 (from Claire Rutter and Verity Martin).”
Two of the three Esky losses took place in three-set matches.
Esky’s Emma Landwehr dropped a 6-4, 5-7, 9-11 decision to Chloe Lanning in No. 4 singles and Sophie Hill and Theresa Noblet came up a little short in a 6-1, 6-7(4), 3-6 loss to Alyssa Bacon and Mira Johnson at No. 2 doubles.
