Flivvers pound Seymour to finish week 3-0
SEYMOUR, Wis. – Heading into last week, the Kingsford boys soccer team’s record stood at 3-2 after a triangular in Marquette.
Now with three straight wins, culminating with Saturday’s 6-0 rout of host Seymour (Wis.), the Flivvers are 6-2 and seem to be gelling.
“It was a busy week for us, and we were thrilled to come away 3-0 on the week,” Kingsford coach Zach Celello said. “There have been so many great things to see during this stretch.”
One of those things has been the play of junior Jett Buckley. The talented forward has scored eight goals in Kingsford’s last three matches, including a hat trick in Saturday’s win over the Thunder.
But the Flivvers have also received scoring contributions from others, as they did against Seymour when Gavin Kinsella and Landen Kenny hit the back of the net. After Buckley put a shot past the Seymour goalkeeper off a feed from Colin Micheau to open the scoring at 11 minutes, Kinsella increased his team’s advantage to 2-0 on what Celello called “a beautiful” unassisted goal 17 minutes into the contest.
About three minutes later, Buckley notched his second off a crossing pass from Evan Grymes to put the Flivvers up 3-0 at the halftime.
“Our attackers have shown a lot of creativity and finished chances well, scoring 12 goals in total during this stretch,” Celello said. “Evan Grymes and Gavin Hendricks have owned the middle of the field with their relentless pressure.”
Sixteen minutes into the second half, Kinsella drew a penalty and Kenny converted the penalty shot for a 4-0 Kingsford lead.
A minute later, the Flivvers pushed their lead to 5-0 when Buckley completed his hat trick off an assist from Tanner McElhinny.
With five minutes remaining in the match, Clark Robb capped the scoring off a throw-in from Grymes.
While the Flivvers’ offense has been clicking, their defense has been stout, surrendering only one goal in their three wins last week.
“The defensive play has been very impressive …,” Celello said. “We’re carrying some really positive momentum into our matchup with Lakeland (Tuesday at Lakeland), and we’re looking forward to what should be a great game.”
