Murvich, Mulligan, Flivver girls post wins at invite

Kingsford sophomore Maria Murvich and junior Cavan Mulligan captured individual titles and the Flivver girls claimed the team championship Tuesday at the Border Battle Invitational at Riverside Country Club in Menominee.

Murvich ran a 20:20.8 to defeat Winley Brandt of Menominee who finished runner-up with a 21:11.6. Mulligan recorded a 17:44.9 to defeat Gladstone senior Teagan Reynolds by 28 seconds.

In the girls team chase, the Flivvers finished with 37 points to outduel Marinette, Wis. (44) for the triumph. Gladstone placed third with 67 and Coleman, Wis., wound up fourth with 72 points among the teams with enough entrants to compile a team score.

Two other Kingsford girls finished in the top 10. Junior Aalayah Noasconi posted a 23:30.5 to take eighth and senior Olivia Wescott finished 10th with a 23:55.4.

Other Flivver girls finishing in the top 20 included sophomore Allison Deuter (18th in 25:59.9) and senior Ingrid Holt (20th in 26:17.2).

“An epic win for the Kingsford Flivver girls cross country team,” said coach Sarah Noasconi.

Aside from Mulligan, two other Flivver boys finished in the top 20. Junior Orrin Smith wound up 15th in 20:13.5 and junior Tyler Phelps placed 18th in 20:30.1

Gladstone captured the boys team title with 24 points, well in front of runner-up Stephenson, which recorded 62 points. The Flivvers placed third at 71 and Holy Name finished fourth at 85 among the scoring teams.
