Norway Speedway and the Dickinson County Racing Association recently completed their 58th year of racing at the Dickinson County Fairgrounds.
A new format was formed this year where there was a regular season championship for 15 events and then there was a series championship that was broken into 5 separate races with enhanced pay called the Fast 5 Series. That series allowed traveling cars a way to come and support the speedway and not have to make a full-time commitment.
The regular season finale that was to determine the regular season championship was scheduled to be Aug. 22. However, Mother Nature had other plans as the races were canceled due to rain.
The Coca-Cola Late Model championship was won for the second year in a row by veteran Joey Pontbriand of Norway. For the second year in a row, he edged out Kingsford’s Scott Stanchina by 78 points. Third was Kingsford’s Cory Cootware.
In the Auto Value Super Stock division there was big drama as it was the first time that two cars went into championship night tied. Defending champion Ryan Wender of Upper Pine Creek, driving a car owned by Pontbriand Racing and set up by Mike Pontbriand, was tied with rookie sensation Andy Secrist of Florence, Wis. With the rainout, the speedway track policy states, in the event of a tie, feature wins determines the champion. Third place went to Hermansville’s Dean Bellmore.

Ryan Wender successfully defended his Auto Value Super Stock division title this season.
Another dramatic ending ruined by rain was the battle between two-time champion BJ Schoneck of Marion, Wis., and fifth-year driver Travis Hulsizer of Menominee. The two battled all summer long and the points lead standing changed several times. Hulsizer went into the night with a 4-point lead and ended up winning his first 141 Auto Sportsman track championship at Norway Speedway.
The truck he drove was owned by 141 Auto and prepared by his dad, Mike, who has been a part of the speedway close to 30 years assisting late model driver John Ostermann. Third was Todd Schmidt of Spread Eagle, Wis.
In the Whelen Fab 4 division, Faithhorn’s Trever Cronick won his first track championship over defending champion Eli Whittkopf of Kingsford. Third was Cronick’s teammate Cody Gunville, who also had his best season.
The four champions were recognized at the opening ceremonies of the Dickinson County Fair Labor Day 100 race. Also recognized was 50-year racing veteran Bruce White of Kingsford. White was recognized on behalf of all the members of the Dickinson County Racing Association and racing fans throughout various communities.
The Fast 5 championship was decided during the Dickinson County Fair at the conclusion of the 100 Lap Coca-Cola Late Model feature. The packed grandstand saw an amazing display of short-track asphalt stock car racing, due to the fact that many great drivers showed up including, NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Champion Johnny Sauter driving a car owned and prepared by Coleman Racing Products.

Travis Hulsizer captured his first 141 Auto Sportsman championship at Norway Speedway.
Also in attendance was Wisconsin racing legend Lowell Bennett, as well as a few more to take on the locals in the Fast 5 Series. There was good, hard racing with all 20 cars in the event, but the trio of Dan Lindsley, Joey Pontbriand and Braison Bennett were especially impressive.
Lindsley took first in the feature, followed by Neenah’s Bennett, who also got fast time at 14.501. Norway’s Pontbriand was third, Kingsford’s Cootware took fourth and Kingsford’s Stanchina placed fifth.
Lindsley is no stranger to winning at the speedway as he was the champion in 2019. Lindsley is the first Fast 5 Series champion, followed by Pontbriand and Stanchina.
Parker Cain of Marquette took first in the dash. John Ostermann of Niagara, Wis., took first in the first heat. Cootware took first in the second heat.
In the Auto Value Super Stock division, Upper Pine Creek’s Wender took fast time at 15.922 and won his third feature event of the summer, solidifying his first Fast 5 Series championship. He defeated surprise entry Cameron Clifford, driving Tim Schultz Jr.’s former championship car to a second-place finish. Clifford is a Norway native who now resides in Charlotte, North Carolina. He was followed by Pembine’s Anthony Schiefelbein, who also took first in the dash.
Fourth was Hermansville’s Bellmore, and and fifth was Kingsford’s Zach Hanson.
Stewart Hornick of Peshtigo, Wis., won the first heat. Payton Linder of Niagara, Wis., won the second heat of the night. In the Fast 5 Series championship, Bellmore placed second and Florence’s rookie driver Secrist was third.
The 141 Auto Sportsman division featured a great battle between teammates Travis Hulsizer and Joe Ostermann, who raced in both the Auto Value Super Stock division and the Sportsman division. It ended with Hulsizer enjoying his first feature win of the season on the night he was recognized for winning his first track championship.
Third was Hayden McFarland of Felch, who also got fast time at 18.106. Spread Eagle’s Schmidt was fourth followed by Tim Krans of Aurora, Wis.
Joe Ostermann took first in the first Heat while Troy LaFave of Iron Mountain got first in the second heat.
The Fast 5 Series championship was won by veteran driver Schmidt in a race car that was built almost 30 years ago. Todd Schmidt is the son of the late Chuck Schmidt a longtime Norway Speedway racer and employee of the track. Placing second was current track champion Hulsizer of Menominee and third was Marion’s BJ Schoneck.
In the Whelen Fab 4 division, Vulcan’s Cody Gunville won his first feature of the season, followed by Eli Whittkopf. Third place went to Zach Gazda of Vulcan, who also took fast time at 17.936. Finishing fourth was Faithorn’s Cronick, who won the heat. Iron Mountain’s Devin Farragh was fifth.
The Fast 5 Series championship was won by current track champion Trever Cronick, followed by Whittkopf and Gunville.
The Spectator Eliminator Championship Round had a full field of 8 cars. These drivers had the best win/loss records this year, including the four event winners. In the deciding race, Paul Elertson overcame rookie Austin Randolph to claim his second consecutive title in the series.
