Kingsford fell behind early but quickly recovered to post a 5-2 win over Three Lakes, Wis., in boys soccer action Thursday at Flivver Field.
KHS finished its regular season with a 12-5-1 record. The Flivvers will enter the MHSAA District 33 playoffs in Division 3 on Wednesday, hosting Kalkaska.
Three Lakes scored three minutes into Thursday’s game on a penalty kick. Kingsford soon evened the score when Gavin Kinsella’s cross found Jett Buckley, who placed it in the net.
“With three minutes to play in the half, Buckley blocked the Three Lakes goalie’s clearance, and Clark Robb scored off the rebound to make it 2-1 heading into halftime,” said Kingsford coach Zach Celello.
Early in the second half, Kinsella found Buckley again to make it 3-1. Ten minutes into the half, Robb found Buckley, who scored to complete his hat trick and make it 4-1.
Another penalty kick by Three Lakes narrowed the score to 4-2.
“With 14 minutes to go in the game, a foul was called in the box, and Three Lakes was awarded another penalty kick,” Celello said. “Landon Adam saved it and immediately played the ball out. Buckley took on the Three Lakes defense and played a cross to Kinsella, who scored to make it 5-2. It was an exciting counter attack, with a saved penalty kick that was capped off by a full-team goal.”
The Flivvers were able to take control of the middle of the field in the second half, creating scoring chances, Celello said.
“It was great to be able to end our regular season on a high note,” he said.
