The Farewell to Summer 500 at Norway Speedway is becoming affectionately known as the Fall 500. The event is put on by the Dickinson County Fair Board and the Dickinson County Racing Association to take advantage of the campgrounds and the multi-purpose room located on the property.
The weekend is family themed and places an emphasis on the children of the fan base and competitors with many activities for the kids.
Admission for the event was only $5 and the it’s growing in all aspects. This year, the event experienced one of the most bizarre weather patterns in years as rain was reported and forecast for the entire weekend. Unbelievably, it seemed to rain everywhere but directly over the Speedway.
The race is a bracketed format that allows any car that meets the standard racing requirements to compete. The winner of this year’s Fall 500 and the winner of the $500 first prize was former Speedway champion Anthony Schiefelbein.
Schiefelbein, whose season was cut short this year due to engine issues, put another motor in to be able to compete. Finishing second was Marquette’s Bode Johnson. He made an exciting last lap pass to move up from fourth. Third was Kingsford’s Jon Maenpaa.

Dean Varda prevailed in the Spectator Eliminators feature at the Fall 500.
In his most impressive run of his career, 2025 Whelen Fab 4 track champion Trever Cronick wowed the crowd by finishing fourth in his four-cylinder.
Stewart Hornick from Peshtigo, Wis., had his best finish of the season at fifth, followed by Felch’s Hayden McFarland. Seventh was Norway’s Joe Ostermann, who was also the fast qualifier at 17.004. Eighth was 141 Auto Sportsman track champion Travis Hulsizer.
Ninth was Marquette’s Shawn Harry, who for the second year in a row took his four-cylinder to an impressive top 10 finish.
Taking advantage of the novel event by trading in his crew chief hat for track champion Ryan Wender and putting on his racing helmet and finishing an impressive 10th was Mike Pontbriand.
In the B Main, there was a surprise winner driving the No. 99 Pat Temple Hall of Famer replica car owned by 141 Auto. Noah O’Connor is the son of Cameron O’Connor, the Speedway’s director of public relations, and it was a very exciting moment for both of them. In only his second race he held off one of the Speedway’s standouts, Green Bay’s Jeff Nooyen, for his first win. Finishing third was Escanaba’s Cody Turner, followed by Iron Mountain’s Emily Vincent and Aurora’s Darren Peterson.
In the Spectator Eliminators Vulcan’s Dean Varda took home 1st place in his Chevy 2500 truck.
In the Powder Puff race Courtney Johnson of Green Bay, Wis., driving Jeff Nooyen’s car, won her first race at Norway Speedway. Second was Iron Mountain’s Emily Vincent, followed by 15-year-old Abby Vanhese, Felch’s Reihannen Reed and Peshtigo’s Sophi Hornick.
The next Norway Speedway event will be the awards banquet held at the Island Resort & Casino on Dec. 27.
